Encounter

Encountering God through meeting with each other

Encounter is a café style service at St Mary’s. It is an informal and friendly evening of worship accompanied by tea, coffee and light refreshments.

Encounter takes place on the first and third Sunday of each month at 7:15pm in the Parish Hall. Refreshments are served from 6:45pm so there is chance to have a drink and a chat beforehand. Alternatively there is also time to come over to Encounter after the 6pm Evensong service in the church.

Most Encounter evenings focus on a particular theme and feature a wide range of activities including presentations, discussion, prayer, music, readings, reflections, poetry, practical activities and crafts.
You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you wish.
These evenings are described as Encounter Journey.
Topics covered are a mixture of aspects of Christianity and contemporary issues from a Christian perspective. Some examples of recent themes include: Advent, Climate Change, Faith and Doubt, Ukraine, Hope, Meeting God Outdoors, Refugees, and Harvest.

From time to time there is an Encounter Supper where we bring and share food around a communal table and a guest speaker talks about their life and faith.

Several times a year Encounter takes the form of an Encounter Explore in the church. A range of unique and innovative prayer stations are set up around the church to visit independently.

Occasionally a local walk is organised by the Encounter team.

Encounter is a great way to meet other people, share fellowship and make new friends whilst exploring and developing your faith. A diverse range of people attend with ages ranging from twenties to nineties.

Everyone is most welcome to Encounter; whether you are completely new to church or already an established member. Do come along and experience Encounter for yourself – we would love to see you there. Just come along or if you would like more information please contact the Encounter Team via the Parish Office.
